Removing Obstacles to Peace & Happiness

What is the difference between peace and happiness? Happiness is a feeling, whereas peace is more a state of being. Happiness is a sunny, bright feeling, and peace…peace is a deep sense that everything is all right.

How can a person feel that “everything is all right” with everything that’s supposedly wrong in the world?

My first question is, what makes you think that something is wrong? At this point you can probably name a few things you think are wrong. So my second question is, what makes you think those things are wrong? What makes you think those things shouldn’t exist?

There’s a short answer and a long answer. For the long answer, see The Transcendent Mystery. The short answer is, if you have peace, happiness is easy to produce. Having peace involves realizing that everything that happens, happens for a reason. That’s not some metaphysical mambo-jumbo. It’s science. The science of homeostasis.

A closed system maintains homeostasis. You may remember that term from your science classes. It simply means balance. If something gets out of balance, the system is set up to return everything to a balanced state. Visualize a large fish aquarium with 50 gallons of water and one fish in it. The water is pure and clear. Then someone puts a drop of black ink over in one corner. The fish avoids that area of the tank. Something is out of balance. If the fish breathes in that big ink spot, it will die. You leave the room and come back the next day. Do you still see the ink spot? More than likely, it’s gone. Where did it go?

The natural laws of science say that a substance will move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This is called diffusion. The ink which was highly concentrated in one corner has spread out so that all the molecules of ink are evenly spaced between the water molecules. Now, the tiny amount of ink that the fish might come into contact with is too small to do any harm.

The same principle works in any system. If we stay out of it and allow nature to take its course, the solution which presents itself is usually the best. For this reason, you can rest assured that nature knows what it is doing. Therefore you can have peace about whatever happens.
