The Four Questions
Do you have stressful thoughts? Are there things in your life that trouble you and steal your happiness?
We have learned that 99% of the thoughts we think are untrue. Consequently, believing those thoughts makes us suffer.
Byron Katie has developed a process she calls “The Work.”:It consists of asking yourself four questions that help you examine the stressful thought. Before asking the questions, fill out the Judge-Your-Neighbor Worksheet. Then, using the statements you wrote on the worksheet, ask:
- Is it true?
- Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
- How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
- Who would you be without that thought?
I would encourage you to watch one of the hundreds of videos on YouTube of Katie doing the Work with people with all kinds of problems. I’m sure you’ll be able to find one that is close to your problem, and that might be helpful to you. Here’s an example:
